Portal series

Each panel in the Portal series presents two realms. The immediate one, finished in a variety of colours and finishes, surrounds an inner realm, viewed through a portal reminiscent of a ship’s porthole, which promises something distant from the immediate.

The panels’ shape arose from a previous artwork, a commission from Campari, CodexCampari, designed to emulate an App icon in 3d. The corners are rounded and the surface appears cushioned and smooth, inviting the viewer to touch but at the same time, as an art object, forbids them to do so. They also reference Russian icons and Malevich’s Black Square.

Portal #1 to #6 to be viewed separately or in groupings: acrylic paint and spray, gesso, mdf, 25 x 25 x 3cm.

Polarise OXXO XOOX

Polarise OXXO XOOX was a response to the political situation arising from Brexit and the increasingly polarised and hardened attitudes evident in the UK elections of November 2019 and many nations worldwide. Originally titled Manifesto it does, as the title suggests, offer alternative arrangements but questions whether the outcomes are actually that different.

The shape of the the panels, derived from a previous commission from Campari, CodexCampari, was designed to emulate an App icon in 3d. The corners are rounded and the surface appears cushioned and smooth, inviting the viewer to touch but at the same time, as an art object, tantalisingly forbids them to do so. It also references traditional Russian icons and Malevich’s Black Square.

CodexCampari

Campari commissioned four Central Saint Martins (UAL) MA Fine Art alumni, through Business and Innovation, each to create a 2d artwork to celebrate 100 years of their cocktail Negroni in October 2019. CodexCampari was the one chosen to join the permanent collection in the Campari gallery, Milan.

The twenty panels, each 25 x 25 x 2 cm, were machine-cut from mdf, then covered with many layers of gesso, sanded and painted in acrylic.

The vertical format was designed to be reminiscent of a smartphone App icon, the panels as keys to virtual and even actual realms. The corners are rounded and the surface appearing cushioned and smooth, invites the viewer to touch but at the same time, as an art object, tantalisingly forbids them to do so. They also reference Russian icons and Malevich’s Black Square.
