Icon Series

These paintings imitate some of the features of traditional Russian icons as both objects of devotion and yet also decoration with a rich, layered history of meaning. They are square and painted on wood with rounded corners to emphasise their objectness. They also reference Malevich’s Black Square (1913) claimed to be the first painting to abandon the depiction of reality.
