I painted the Rider series in response to an invitation by the curator Sally Gorham to show work in ‘Colour’, a group exhibition at the Luren gallery, Suzhou, China in April 2019.

Research into Chinese culture showed that each colour held significance in the everyday, both domestically and architecturally. For example, Red (Fire) is associated with happiness and success. Each of these paintings was painted with a dominant colour, abstract and without reference to any symbolic meaning.
